PSI Affiliates Warn of Escalating Health and Care Workforce Migration Crisis in Africa

Unions in Ghana and Nigeria called on African governments to increase investment in the public healthcare system. With a density of 1 health worker per 5,707 and 1.83 per 1,000 people Ghana and Nigeria - far below the benchmark of 4.45 per 1,000, unions called on African governments to urgently recommit to the Abuja Declaration by allocating at least 15% of national budgets to health.

Long standing underfunding of the public healthcare systems, privatisation of services, weak governance, unsafe working environments, and the absence of decent work, training in Africa is driving health and care workers to migrate from the content and professional development opportunities.

PSI Unions in Ghana and Nigeria called on African governments to increase investment in the public healthcare system beginning with the implementation of the Abuja declaration, which stipulates that 15% of national annual budgets must be invested in public healthcare system.

The unions also called for fair taxation of the wealthy and corporations to fund public services.
