Key Findings
This study found existing social protection coverage such as health and social insurance, contributory pensions, COVID-19 palliatives etc. limited and poorly implemented.
The findings also confirmed limited experience of decent work, social protection and quality public services.
The research affirmed increasing awareness and understanding on the nexus between conflicts and climate change as critical drivers of internal displacement in Nigeria.
The findings also established strong support for effective incorporation and integration of climate justice, social protection and decent work for frontline public service workers in displacement situations in the country.
The study views the policy influencing role of PSI Nigeria positively, and affirms tested trade unions’ strategies such as organizing, representing, canvassing, information sharing, etc. as vital tools.
Therefore, the study considered social dialogue, capacity building, partnership and collaboration, as well as amplification of the concerns of IDPs and frontline workers in displacement as very important.
This participatory research report forms part of a project on the union defending unions implemented by Public Services International (PSI), with the support of the Swedish Solidarity Support Organization, Union-To-Union and the Swedish Trade Union affiliate, ASSR.
Started in 2020, the project aimed at building the capacity of PSI affiliates to defend the human rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to quality public services in Nigeria. Facilitated within the framework of Union Defending Human Rights, Climate Justice, and Quality Public Services, the project prioritizes the rights of IDPs to access quality public services as well as building the capacities of the affiliates to engage on the issue of internal displacement, including leading advocacy and alliance-building for decent work and social protection as it relates to the frontline public service workers in displacement setting in the country.
