Supporting Health and Care Workers for Climate Resilience in Ghana
The project aims to strengthen the resilience and well-being of health and care workers in Ghana by addressing climate change impacts on their work. Through improved safety measures, training, and policy advocacy, it equips workers to manage climate-related health challenges and protect their rights, while bolstering the health system's overall response capacity.
This project addresses the intersection of climate change and care by focusing on the health and safety of health and care workers in the health sector and the increasing burden of care resulting from climate-related health impacts in Ghana. Using an action-based learning approach, it engages health and care workers as both participants and contributors in developing solutions to the challenges they face.
The project’s first priority is to improve the working conditions of health and care workers, who are increasingly exposed to occupational hazards such as extreme weather, high temperatures, and environmental degradation. By conducting risk assessments, providing training, negotiating for improved conditions and advocating for policy changes, the project aims to create safer and more supportive work environments.
The second priority is to advocate for the capacity of health and care workers and the health and care system in Ghana to manage the growing demands of care caused by climate change, including the rise of vector-borne diseases, waterborne illnesses, and malnutrition.

Through ongoing engagement and documentation of experiences, the project amplifies the voices of health and care workers, ensuring their needs and insights are integrated into local and national climate and health policies. This participatory process fosters continuous learning and adaptation, enabling health and care workers to identify practical solutions while contributing to systemic improvements.
The project ultimately aims to strengthen health and care systems’ resilience to climate change, safeguard the well-being of health and care workers, and promote equitable, sustainable, and climate-sensitive health policies.
Project Activities
PSI and unions in Ghana launched a climate and care project that puts health workers at the centre of climate action. Through action-based learning, they’re mapping solutions to the daily climate impacts care workers face—flooded clinics, heat stress, and rising workloads.
