Decent Work and Dignity for Sanitation Workers in South Asia
Sanitation workers across South Asia play a crucial role in public health and hygiene but continue to face hazardous working conditions, low wages, and social discrimination. In partnership with national trade unions, this project aims to organise and empower sanitation workers in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Nepal.
The project supports unions in advocating for formal employment, improved wages, and better working conditions while also addressing gender inclusivity and social protection. Key activities include worker organising, policy engagement, and capacity building for sanitation workers to secure their rights and dignity.
By strengthening collective bargaining power and engaging with employers, governments, and international stakeholders, the project seeks to create lasting change in labour rights and workplace safety for thousands of sanitation workers in the region.
Project Activities
The objectives and background of the sanitation project in South Asia, were discussed. Individual unions shared their current issues and achievable vision for the next 3-5 years. Priority actions, collaboration/partnerships, and organising methods were considered.
