Capacity Building and Organisational Strengthening for Lady Health Workers

The Lady Health Workers (LHWs) in Pakistan, are confronted with many challenges. Non-regularisation of jobs as government servant, irregular salaries, uncertain job conditions, a lack of service structure, long hours, being forced to go to ‘uncovered areas’, sexual harassment, domestic violence and safety & security at the work place.

Our international union solidarity project in Pakistan has helped tens of thousands of community health workers win formal recognition. Last month, PSI General Secretary Rosa Pavanelli led an international visit to support their efforts and share their strategies with other unions in the region. Victories like this are made stronger with the support of global partners: Fórsa, Kommunal, Fagforbundet, FOA and JHL.

ASLHWEU Documentary - Lady Health Workers in Pakistan

This project builds on successful earlier cycles that supported the organisation of Lady Health Workers (LHWs) in Sindh province, Pakistan. It aims to strengthen the All Sindh Lady Health Workers and Employees Union (ASLHWEU) and expand efforts into Punjab through the Punjab Ladies Health Workers Union (PLHWU).

The project supports union-building, training, and advocacy to improve LHWs’ working conditions, promote regularisation of employment, and address issues like health and safety, gender-based violence, and fair wages. It also facilitates the formation of a national platform for LHWs to increase solidarity and policy influence across provinces.

Ultimately, the project benefits tens of thousands of LHWs who deliver essential public health services in Pakistan’s communities. By empowering LHWs through democratic unions, the project contributes to stronger health systems and gender equity.
