Advancing Public Sector Workers’ Rights in Sub-Saharan Africa

This project supported by SASK and our Finish affiliates, brings together four key thematic areas—gender-based violence (GBV), informal work focused on community health workers, climate change and just transition, and trade union rights. It aims to strengthen public sector trade unions across Africa through capacity building, social dialogue, and strategic campaigns. The project promotes workers’ rights and supports union organizing efforts in ten countries.

Key initiatives include advocating for the ratification and implementation of ILO Convention 190 to combat GBV in workplaces, improving the recognition and working conditions of community health workers, enhancing trade union engagement in climate change mitigation and just transition, and defending trade union rights in politically hostile environments.

By building cross-country synergies, this project enhances learning for workers’ collective power to improve working conditions and contribute to quality public services. The initiative will ultimately benefit workers, communities, and the broader labour movement by promoting decent work, safety, and rights for all.
