Young workers in PH and Malaysia participate in leadership and union trainings

PSI organised several activities in Malaysia and the Philippines to boost youth’s participation and leadership in unions.

PSI organised several activities in Malaysia and the Philippines to boost youth’s participation and leadership in unions. In Malaysia, 60 young workers from the different public sector unions gathered in Sabah for the National Youth Leadership Workshop on November 26 to 28, 2022. Jointly organised by the Malaysia National Coordinating Committee (Public Services International affiliated unions) and the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil services (CUEPACS), the activity aimed to increase the leadership and organising capacities of the young workers in public services as many young workers are not actively involved in union issues and activities. At the end of the workshop, participants pledged to continue organising more workers in their respective unions.

In the Philippines, 19 young workers from the nine PSI affiliates participated in the leadership and collective negotiation workshop on November 4 and 5, 2022 in Quezon City. Senior leaders both from the public and the private sector affiliates of PSI led the training of young workers to prepare them to lead and participate in the unions’ bargaining team. Another 24 young workers joined a follow-up activity, “Basic Organising Training for the Young Workers in the Public Sector” held in Iloilo City on December 23, 2022. In the program, Annie Geron, PSI Vice President for AP shared an analysis of the Public Sector Labor Relations in the Philippines. At the end of the workshop, young workers manifested to join the efforts to organise workers in local government units that are not yet organised.
