Workshop on the impact of foreign debt on human rights in Pakistan

On December 4, 2022, nine PSI affiliates in Pakistan participated in a hybrid workshop where they debated the results of the draft report, “Impact of Foreign Debt on Labour Rights in Pakistan”.  This research is expected to  produce a preliminary policy proposal for submission to the government of Pakistan on the implications of budget cuts on public services employees and public services. Among the probable impacts include job losses, low wages, poor social security, pensions and increasing precarious work in the public sector.

As a follow-up to the workshop, the affiliates also came out with a media strategy. Press Conferences in four venues were held in the second half of December.

Previously, PSI APREC in Singapore passed a resolution and established a solidarity fund to support affiliates in Pakistan to address the devastating floods across Sindh and Balochistan provinces. In the said resolution, APREC also called on the governments to cancel all of Pakistan’s debts to IMF and other lenders especially in view of the climate crisis caused partly by neo-liberal policies.
