Women's Committee members in Brazil meet with Women's Minister to discuss National Care Plan and C190

The adoption of laws dealing with care work and the ratification of Convention 190 of the International Labor Organization (ILO) have been at the heart of the gender equality policies developed by PSI and its affiliates.

Representatives of the Confederation of Municipal Public Service Workers (CONFETAM), the National Federation of Social Workers (FENAS), the National Federation of Nurses (FNE), the Nurses' Union of the State of São Paulo and the Federation of Workers' Unions of Brazilian Universities (FASURA)of the State of São Paulo and the Federation of Workers' Unions of Brazilian Universities (FASURA), affiliated to the Public Services International (PSI) in Brazil, participated in a strategic meeting with the Minister of Women, Cida Gonçalves, which dealt with the organization of national participation in the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), scheduled to take place in March 2025. The organizations also handed the minister two letters with points related to the National Care Plan and the ratification of ILO Convention 190, both of which are being debated in the country.

Luba Melo, a member of the PSI's Inter-American Women's Committee, stressed the importance of the active participation of Brazilian organizations in the construction of this global and national care agenda and in the fight against gender violence. "At the meeting with the Minister, we discussed essential issues for female public service workers, such as the National Care Plan and the ratification of Convention 190. The National Care Policy is crucial to guaranteeing the population's access to quality services, as well as valuing workers in these areas, which are mostly women, such as health, basic education, social assistance and domestic work. We also emphasized the need to reduce the overload of unpaid work that falls on so many women in Brazil," said Melo.

As well as consolidating the demands that the Brazilian delegation will take to CSW69, the meeting reinforced the importance of broad coordination between trade union organizations and the federal government to build public policies that advance gender equality and strengthen the rights of women workers in public services and the private sector.
