Unity forged among private hospital unions in the Philippines

On March 21, 2023, PSI affiliate, the Alliance of Filipino Workers (AFW), together with independent unions spearheaded an activity aimed at forging unity among the trade unions in private hospitals in the Philippines.

Twenty-five unions from different private hospitals in the country resolved to form a coalition, United Private Hospitals Unions of the Philippines (UPHUP) to collectively work in addressing common issues and problems faced by health workers especially after the pandemic.

The group also resolved to adopt PSI’s campaign to enact a New Philippine Nursing Practice Act which is currently pending in the House of Representatives and in the Senate.

AFW National President, Mr. Rene Capito, highlighted the need to collectively work together, set aside organizational differences, and instead focus on more important issues of the health workers. According to Capito, majority of hospitals in the country do not grant important and much-needed benefits of health workers such as One Covid Allowance (OCA), Hospital Employees Allowance (HEA), Special Risk Allowance (SRA), and Meal and Transportation Allowance ( MAT)

The Public Services International (PSI) will continue to work with affiliates and allies to improve health workers working conditions and their labour rights to organize and collectively bargain.
