Unions Meet on Health Consequences of Flood and Climate Crises

A roundtable dialogue was organised by Workers Education and Research Organisation (WERO).Participants discussed health challenges in Pakistan arising from COVID-19, floods, and climate change, examined both global and national health governance systems, explored the gender dimensions of climate impacts, and highlighted the social costs of poor public sector performance during climate-related crises.

PSI affiliates in Pakistan shared their concerns over the public sector’s response to climate change and natural disasters, particularly the recent floods in Sindh, highlighting critical gaps in infrastructure, coordination, preparedness, and health governance.

Participants criticized the exploitative nature of global health governance and noted deficiencies in data availability, resource allocation, and emergency planning. Despite challenges, they commended frontline public workers for their vital role in response efforts and called for improved planning, stakeholder coordination, and implementation of workers' rights during crises.

Key recommendations included conducting regular climate-related research, integrating emergency response systems, providing alternative employment and OSH training for fossil fuel workers, ensuring social protection coverage, strengthening public sector unions, opposing restrictive labor laws, and equipping emergency workers with proper safety training and protective gear.

Unions were urged to balance their dual role of protecting both the public and their members during emergencies.
