Remembering Anders Jonsson: A Life Dedicated to Workers' Rights

The global trade union movement mourns the loss of Anders Jonsson, a Swedish trade unionist and member of the Executive Committees of PSI and EPSU who passed away on 3 January 2026 after a brief illness.

With nearly 50 years of service to the labour movement and progressive politics, Anders leaves behind a remarkable legacy of solidarity, dedication, and tireless advocacy for workers' rights across the world.

Anders was a prominent figure within Kommunal, Sweden's Municipal Workers' Union, where he served as an international ombudsman for over 20 years and the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO). Most recently, he was a parliamentary candidate for the Social Democrats ahead of Sweden's autumn elections.

In the international arena, Anders represented the Nordic Group of public service unions in both EPSU and PSI, where he became known as a constructive problem-solver who consistently sought to unite different groups of unions toward common goals. He joined many PSI solidarity missions to stand with unionists under attack, such as in Nicaragua in 2013 to investigate the murder of union leaders. At EPSU's 2024 Congress, affiliates recognized his exceptional abilities by electing him Chair of the Standing Orders Committee—a position he executed brilliantly.

PSI President Britta Lejon expressed her profound grief, saying: "Anders was warm, selfless and humble devoting his life to work for a better world for the many. His many years in the trade union movement gave him friends in many parts of the world. I will always keep his memory close to my heart. He helped me very much in the first years as PSI president, giving valuable insight into how we had done things earlier in our history."

PSI General Secretary Daniel Bertossa said “Anders was much loved and will be missed greatly. His understated presence, diplomatic skills and deep understanding of trade union history was appreciated by all at PSI. His warmth and sharp insight gave him the ability to bring comrades from different positions together.”

EPSU General Secretary Jan Willem Goudriaan reflected on Anders's contributions: "Anders was always constructively looking for solutions to assist the union movement going forward. Together with the then new President of Kommunal we visited the unions in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The hospitality was legendary. We walked the market/Bazar in Bishkek enjoying the conversation with the unionists and each other. Anders was deeply committed to make sure our movement had a place in Central Asia as well. I will miss his council, commitment and friendship."

Enzo Bernando from FP CGIL offered his tribute: "We have lost Anders Jonsson, a true comrade. We worked with him through EPSU and PSI. He was a fraternal friend of Fp CGIL Nazionale and of all Mediterranean trade unions. He played a key role in strengthening relations between Swedish and Nordic unions and all of us. He will be missed. Ciao, Anders."

Daria Ciabrio, PSI Senior Policy Officer said "Anders' loss has truly saddened my heart. He embodied the quiet strength of a rock solid union internationalist. He always stood by PSI, our sectoral, cooperation, trade union rights and and solidarity work. He worked with young workers to prepare the next generation of trade unionist and did not have time to enjoy his well deserved retirement. He will be missed very much"

The trade union community extends heartfelt condolences to Anders's family and to all his comrades at Kommunal and around the world. His memory will continue to inspire workers and trade unionists around the world in our fight dignity, justice, and a better world for all.
