Ramsay Health Workers in Australia Secure $10 million in Backpay

PSI members from the New South Wales Nurses and Midwives Association have secured an historic Fair Work Commission win that shows health multinational Ramsay underpaid thousands of staff.

NSWNMA General Secretary Shaye Candish said the win meant affected workers, such as many full time Resident Nurses, could receive more than $ 1000 per year for up to six years. Ramsay’s total backpay liability is estimated to be well over $10 million.

The Fair Work Commission agreed with the NSWNMA that Ramsay had been miscalculating annual leave payments for up to six years.

Thousands of nurses will now need to be backpaid for shift and weekend penalties they would have received if they hadn’t taken annual leave.

The NSWNMA says backpay should go back to 2018, though Ramsay has yet to respond to the Association on that point.

The victory follows strikes to improve working conditions at Ramsay facilities across Australia.

Meanwhile a recent report from CFDT union in France exposes how property speculators are extracting billions from Ramsay hospitals across Europe.
