PSI workshop in Indonesia on strengthening women and youth leadership

The national activity of the PSI - DGB BW project was conducted in Jakarta, Indonesia. Anchoring on the theme “Strengthening Women and Youth Leadership in the Trade Union Movement”, 27 young people from six affiliated unions attended the three-day workshop on April 23-25, 2019.

Nico Forteza, the project coordinator of this project, led the training program accompanied by the PSI-SEA Sub Regional Secretary Ian Mariano and Indah Budiarti, PSI Project Coordinator.

Through brainstorming and sharing knowledge between participants, this workshop focused on strengthening PSI young leaders by helping them to: raise awareness on trade union issues, to better organise, to learn to mobilize young workers and encourage participation in decision-making bodies of the labour movement.

Brother Kuncoro, President of the PP Indonesia Power, as an experienced trade union member and leader, offered the fundamental values and roles in enhancing the participants as future trade union leaders. He highlighted that nurturing and mentoring the next generation of leaders is also part of the role of union leaders, to shape management skills and improve young leaders’ competences in union leadership.

During the workshop, the participants discussed a wide range of topics such as LGBTQI, youth organising, women’s rights, gender equality and youth leadership. The small group discussions that took place during the world café session helped transfer information and facilitated focused conversations. Thanks to Ms Vivi Widyawati, from Perempuan Mahardika, LGBTQI and rights at the workplace was discussed for the first time among Indonesian young workers.

Following a SWOT analysis on the situation of youth, women and the leadership in trade unions, participants committed to meet the challenge of strengthening their organisations by bringing information and proposing solutions based on the teachings and conclusions of the workshop.
