The meeting brought together union representatives from Venezuela, the United States, Canada and the sub-regions of the Caribbean, Southern Cone, Central America, Brazil and Andean countries with the aim of building a collective reading of the geopolitical context of the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela and the violations of the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people and peace in the region.
The meeting included a panel on the situation on the ground in Venezuela, with the participation of union representatives from affiliated parties of the collegiate coordination, who spoke about the current political context, and its impact on daily life and the context of working conditions, wages and the exercise of freedom of association. Raul Ordonez, from FEDESIEMHIDROVEN, Zenaida Figueres, from SUNEPSAS and Carmelo Sánchez, from SINTRAINCES spoke. In addition, Luis Zavala, as a member of the PSI Inter-American Regional Committee in Venezuela, expressed his gratitude for the solidarity and actions proposed by PSI unions in the region.
During the opening of the event, PSI Inter-America's regional secretary, Euan Gibb, stressed that the current scenario far exceeds the Venezuelan case. "Today we are meeting to talk about Venezuela, but we all understand that it is not just about Venezuela," he said, warning of a worrying intensification of regional imperialist logics of domination discussed by the government of Donald Trump.
PSI strongly condemned the military intervention of the United States against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela that took place on January 3, affirming that they violate the sovereignty, territorial integrity and the right to self-determination of the Venezuelan people. They constitute a serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter and set a dangerous precedent and a risk for regional peace and stability.
The meeting was also attended by PSI General Secretary Daniel Bertossa, who reaffirmed PSI's condemnation of Trump's attacks on the sovereignty of countries in the region. "This meeting is part of an expression of solidarity by PSI and our affiliates with the people of Venezuela. It has been a difficult time for the people of Venezuela recently, especially for their unions and their union leaders, and it has been made much worse by Trump's actions and also by his words. We are very clear that we condemn Trump's military aggression, we condemn the violation of Venezuela's sovereignty," said the general secretary.
As a result of the meeting, PSI agreed on a series of key actions, including a call to affiliated unions in the region to join the mobilizations in defense of Venezuela's sovereignty, in rejection of any military intervention, as well as to promote pronouncements in their national trade union centers. It was also resolved to support trade union organizations in urging their governments to take a stand against intervention and against war in order to pressure parliamentarians and governments to oppose U.S. interventions, in addition to the one already signed by several countries in the region, such as Mexico and Colombia, and Spain.
PSI also pledged to send a letter to Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, endorsing the need for a social dialogue in good faith and with results, stressing that "there is no peace without trade union freedom". The agreements also include the launching of a regional privatization monitoring committee, which will have Venezuela as one of its priority countries, and the exploration of an international trade union solidarity mission in 2026.
In his closing remarks, Euan Gibb insisted on the urgency of a collective and articulated response from the international trade union movement. "It is absolutely essential that we build a unified response: we are all at risk," he said. For his part, Luis Zavala, thanked PSI affiliates for their solidarity in these difficult times, "without solidarity and unity both within the country and with you at the international level, we will not be able to improve the situation of Venezuelans. That is why ours is a commitment to social justice in our country and in the region, together and with your support."
With this meeting, PSI reaffirms its historic commitment to peace, the sovereignty of peoples and the defense of trade union and labor rights, strengthening international solidarity as a key tool in the face of escalating threats in the region.
