PSI Condemns Israeli Death Penalty Law for Palestinians

PSI joins the EU, several European governments, and Amnesty International in calling for the law's repeal, citing risks of discrimination and violations of the right to life.

Public Services International expresses its deep concern regarding the continuing escalation of Israeli violence on Palestinian lives. On 30 March, the Israeli Parliament passed a controversial bill that imposes the death penalty on Palestinians convicted of fatal terrorist attacks.

PSI reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the protection of Human Rights, including those of all detainees, the respect of due process, and the adherence to international humanitarian and human rights law under all circumstances.

The EU’s diplomatic service has condemned the proposal, with Britain, France, Germany and Italy expressing “deep concern” over the legislation, which “undermines Israel’s commitments with regards to democratic principles”.

PSI calls on relevant authorities to refrain from adopting measures that endanger the lives of detainees or undermine fundamental legal protections. We also urge the international community, trade unions, and civil society organisations to remain vigilant and to act collectively to uphold human dignity and the rule of law.

Amnesty International says the current proposals “would constitute a violation of the right to life and, when imposed against Palestinians from the Occupied Palestinian Territories, may also amount to war crimes.”

PSI calls on the international community to exert maximum pressure to repeal this law and hold Israel accountable to meet its obligations under international law.
