PSI affiliate in Jordan the General Trade Union for Workers in Electricity (GTUWE) implemented a sit-in on 9 November 2016 in front of the electricity company in Ras Al Ain to protest against the Jordanian electricity company’s rejection of the workers’ demands.

The union is demanding that:

  • All employees should be entitled to a compensation of 25,000 Dinars if they are subject to involuntary termination of service at 55 years old (rather than 60 years old)
  • Legal heirs should benefit from this compensation in case of death of the employee.
  • All employees should be entitled to a refund of their contributions to the pension fund in case of involuntary termination of the contract of employment.
  • All employees should be entitled to 30 days of leave, on equal basis.
  • All employees and their families should be entitled to health insurance similar to the one granted to senior staff.
  • The salary should be increased to adjust to the cost of living.
  • The company's contribution to the saving fund should be increased from 11% to 13%.

Workers of the National electricity company and the electricity company in Al Samra have also been protesting against the unilateral decision by the government to cancel the benefit of health insurance for the workers and their families.

PSI has sent a protest letter to the Jordanian government, urging them to enter into dialogue with the union and propose a response to their demands.
