PSI firmly denounces the raid by Israeli army and intelligence forces into the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU) headquarters in Nablus, located on Palestinian territory in the Occupied West Bank, which occurred on 15 October, calling it a flagrant attack on trade union rights and workers' freedom of association.
During the assault, Israeli forces destroyed the general secretary's offices and multiple departments, smashing entry doors throughout the building. This marks the second major attack on PGFTU infrastructure in less than two years. In March 2024, Israeli forces bombed the PGFTU's main headquarters in Gaza City three times, completely destroying it along with subsidiary offices in Al-Rimal and Yarmouk. The union condemned that attack as "systematic," leaving PGFTU leaders displaced and unable to operate effectively.
PSI General Secretary Daniel Bertossa condemned the Israeli aggression: "This assault is not an isolated incident - it reflects a systematic campaign against trade unionists throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the West Bank and Gaza. During this war, we have witnessed attacks on schools, hospitals, and trade union headquarters. These are the spaces where workers organize for dignity, safety, and justice. Attacking them is an attack on the fundamental right of working people to organize and defend themselves collectively."
"PSI stands in complete solidarity with the PGFTU and all Palestinian workers. Lasting peace in the region requires the protection of trade union rights, respect for workers' organizations, and adherence to international labour standards - not intimidation, repression, or violence against the institutions that defend working people."
PGFTU is the largest Palestinian labour body representing over 300,000 workers, with its leaders describing Israeli attacks as deliberate efforts to dismantle labour organizing and Palestinian economic resilience.
