Indian unions call for indefinite strike
Trade unions in India, members of PSI affiliate Indian National Defence Workers’ Federation, have formed a National Joint Council of Action (NJCA), requesting the Indian Government to negotiate a charter of demands. However, despite several actions and requests for negotiations since November 2015, the government has not responded to any of the unions’ requests.
The NJCA’s demands to the government include:
- Change the pay scales to remove injustice
- End privatisation and outsourcing of government functions
- Grant pension rights to all central government employees
- Do not make an amendments to labour laws that would remove existing benefits to workers
Following a series of actions, the unions have called for a rally on 9th June 2016 to serve the strike notice. The indefinite strike is planned to begin on 11th July 2016.
