ILC2023 General Survey "Achieving gender equality at work"

The discussion on the General Survey took place on 6 June, in the Commission of Application of Standards (CAS) at the 111th Session of the International Labour Conference (#ILC2023).

In March, this year the Committee of Experts in Application on Conventions and Recommendations-CEACR, released the General Survey “Achieving gender equality at work” that focuses on the Discrimination (Employment and Occupation) Convention, 1958 (No. 111), the Workers with Family Responsibilities Convention, 1981 (No. 156), the Maternity Protection Convention, 2000 (No. 183), the Discrimination (Employment and Occupation) Recommendation, 1958 (No. 111), the Workers with Family Responsibilities Recommendation, 1981 (No. 165), and the Maternity Protection Recommendation, 2000 (No. 191).

PSI was represented during the discussion with three interventions:  Juneia Batista-CUT Brazil, Marcelo Di Stefano-CONTUA and Verónica Montúfar-PSI.

Juneia Batista - CUT, BRASIL

The clear interpretation of care as a human right and its link with the redistribution of family care responsibilities among all workers can help address gender biases and inequality.
ILO Conventions are fabulous tools for guaranteeing and expanding rights. Convention 111 on discrimination, while important in its time, needs to be updated in light of the new phenomena of discrimination with the use of new media and algorithms

The redistribution of family responsibilities must be promoted along with the provision of public care services. Shared responsibility for care must be understood under the direction and control of states
