Global Union Delegation meets the UN Ambassador of the Philippines in Geneva
Right after the meeting, a protest was held where the global labour movement came together calling "Hands off trade unions!" (photos here)
In the past three years, at least 45 trade unionists have been murdered in the Philippines. Countless more are threatened with violence and false charges. Unionists, journalists and human rights activists critical of the government or assertive of their right to organise have been labelled terrorists and enemies of the state and put on anti-terror lists - red-tagged - in an effort to discredit them and make them vulnerable targets.
In June, the ILO determined that a high-level tripartite Mission should be sent to the Philippines, but the Philippine government continues to refuse the Mission.
We call on the Philippine government Phillipines Department of Labor and Employment to accept the ILO Mission!
