The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by the General Assembly by its resolution 61/106 of 13 December 2006. It came into force on 3 May 2008 upon the 20th ratification. Article 40 of the Convention stipulates that “The States Parties shall meet regularly in a Conference of States Parties in order to consider any matter with regard to the implementation of the present Convention.”
The 11th session is scheduled to take place at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, from 12 to 14 June 2018 under the overarching theme of “Leaving no one behind through the full implementation of the CRPD”. Sub-themes include:
- National fiscal space, public-private partnerships and international cooperation for strengthening the implementation of the CRPD
- Women and girls with disabilities
- Political participation and equal recognition before the law

Using Social Dialogue to Advance the CRPD

The purpose of this event is to identify how Social Dialogue is, or could be, used to ensure the implementation of the CRPD. Social Dialogue is closely linked with States Parties Obligation to involve persons with disabilities, but also to access to employment. The event will:
- define the role and the scope of social dialogue in relation to the rights of persons with disabilities;
- identify the key entry points and opportunities to promote the implementation of the CRPD using social dialogue;
- identify challenges that exist for governments and Social Partners;
- issue recommendations on how to ensure that social dialogue becomes a vehicle for advancing the rights of persons with disabilities.
