Regional Review for Latin America and Caribbean of the UN Global Compact for Migration (online)
April 26 to 28, 2021 (Santiago, Chile)

Multi-Stakeholder Consultation (online)
April 13 to 15, 2021 (Santiago, Chile)

The Regional review meeting of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in Latin America and the Caribbean UN Global Compact on Migration (GCM) takes place during the period April 26 to 28.

The purpose of the Meeting is to provide a common platform where UN member states and all other stakeholders can contribute to the debate on the challenges, progress and needs in the implementation of the Global Compact in the Latin America and Caribbean region. All ECLAC Member States as well as workers’ and employers’ organisations, civil society organisations (CSOs) and a wide and diversified range of other stakeholders will participate.

A Multi-Stakeholder Consultation Meeting (online) takes place prior to the inter-governmental meeting. The online meeting will take place during the period April 15 to 18, 2021.

Objectives of the consultation include

  • To exchange information on the progress, challenges and opportunities in the region regarding the implementation of the GCM.

  • To propose recommendations to enhance progress in the implementation of the GCM; and

  • To elaborate a synthesis on the main results of the consultation to be presented in the inter-governmental meeting.

PSI has been actively engaged in the UN GCM process since its negotiation phase and welcomed the adoption of the GCM in 2018. Since then there have been regional reviews tracking its implementation from 2020 through to 2021. The global review, the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), will be in 2022.

The global compact for migration is the first, inter-governmentally negotiated agreement, prepared under the auspices of the United Nations, to cover all dimensions of international migration in a holistic and comprehensive manner. The list of the 23 objectives are in paragraph 16 of the GCM.
