Following up on this earlier Circular from the Head Office, all affiliates organising workers in the health and social services sector across the Africa and Arab countries region are hereby invited to participate in an online consultation on the ILO "Decent work for care economy workers in a changing economy" General Survey.

This survey, which requires submissions from national unions to the ILO by or before the end of June, covers two important international labour standards, i.e., the Nursing Personnel Convention, 1977 (No.149), and the Nursing Personnel Recommendation, 1977 (No. 157).

These are the only two health and care sector-specific ILO instruments now. And this would be the first time they are being reviewed. The review is also against the background of the Covid-19 pandemic and would cover the impact and lessons of this for all health and social care workers.

We need to seize this opportunity by raising awareness of the instruments, the review and how we can use these for the benefit of nurses and other health and social care workers; influencing the review by making timely recommendations which highlight the barriers nurses and other health workers face in securing decent work and trade union rights, as well as the threats posed by inadequate funding of public health services, privatisation, outsourcing and austerity

The consultation will allow us to discuss these two instruments' merits and deficits and identify recommendations to improve the international normative standards covering health workers.

The draft PSI briefing paper that presents an outline of the General Survey process, a summary of the two instruments and our recommendations will be presented at the regional consultation.

The consultation will take place on the Zoom platform. English, French, and Arabic interpretation will be available for the meeting. You have to register to participate. Once you register, you will get the link for your participation.
