The Hearing will provide all relevant stakeholders with an opportunity to contribute to the preparatory process in a day of interactive multi-stakeholder panel discussions that
will include Member States as well as representatives from civil society, nongovernmental organizations, the academic and scientific community, the private sector, philanthropy and others.
PSI Head of Campaigns, Sandra Vermuyten, will be taking PSI's key messages to the Hearing and speaking on the panel "Upholding and protecting the human rights and dignity of all refugees and migrants in the context of large movements".
PSI has called on all its affiliates to lobby their governments for rights-based policies to ensure that all migrants and refugees have access to public services, social protection and access to decent work in the labour market. This implies:
- Protection and reception of refugees and providing them with access to quality public services, primarily the right to healthcare.
- Access of refugees to decent work and social protection for their sustainable integration to society.
- Safe and decent working conditions for workers at the frontlines.
- Ensure funding of public services and providing adequate staff.
- in order to provide access to public services and ensure inclusion for all migrants, asylum seekers and refugees, it is important to build a “firewall” between public services and immigration control.
- Condemn deals that allow countries to “outsource” their obligation to humanitarian and human rights law to other countries.
- Fight Racism, xenophobia and all forms of intolerance
- Address the root causes: Implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, fight for tax justice; fair trade, funding of public services and social protection, and promote decent work and decent life for all.
