What is Generative AI?
Have you heard of ChatGPT, Dall-E or Gemini (formerly Bard)? They are a few of the most popular generative AI interfaces. Gen AI is a type of artificial intelligence technology that can produce different kinds of content, including text, imagery, audio and synthetic data. Consultancy companies estimate that over Generative AI could automate up to 300 million full-time jobs.
Yet all is not as glossy as those creating these systems would want us to think. Numerous cases show how bad they are at logical reasoning. They are gender biased, they “lie”, hallucinate and they are culturally biased.
Yet across the world, employers are asking workers to use these systems to cut costs and improve efficiency.
In this workshop, our digital consultants Christina J. Colclough and Hannah Johnston will facilitate our discussions on how Gen AI might affect work, workers and skills. We will ask whether we can trust these systems and what union strategies we should begin to formulate to safeguard workers’ rights and quality public services.
