The UNSG’s High-Level Panel (HLP) on Women’s Economic Empowerment, established in January 2016, has combined energy, commitment and action to develop an agenda in support of women’s economic empowerment for achieving the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

The Panel, with influential membership from governments, private sector, civil society and global multi-lateral institutions, laid out seven drivers of transformation. The 61st Commission on the Status of Women (March 2017) on Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work also committed to creating an enabling environment for women’s work by transforming the economies and societies in which they live.

During the HLPF 2017 member states will review SDG 5 (together with SDG 1, 2, 3, 9, 14 and 17) on the theme Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world. Bringing together HLP members, the Group of Champions and other stakeholders, this event will highlight concrete actions that demonstrate linkages between women’s economic empowerment and the achievement of the SDGs – to ensure women’s voice, choice and security – so that no one is left behind. The Group of Champions are Argentina, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica (Co-Chair), Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, UAE, UK (Co-Chair) & Zambia. Participants at this event will also share ideas on how information communication technology can be leveraged to support women’s economic empowerment to achieve the 2030 Agenda.
