68th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe (Rome)

  • 17 Sep - 20 Sep
  • Rome, Italy

In furtherance of its commitment to advancing universal public health care, PSI will be making a joint statement with the European Public Health Association (EUPHA) and other civil society organisations on ‘Advancing public health for sustainable development in the WHO European Region’.

In our contribution to this, we stress the need for investing in public health, including for improving employment and working conditions in the health services, in line with the recommendations of the UN High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth and provisions of the WHO/ILO/OECD “Working for Health”: Five-Year Action Plan for Health Employment and Inclusive Economic Growth.

PSI and EPSU will equally be presenting a written statement on the agenda item: “Can people afford to pay for health care? New evidence on financial protection in Europe”. We will call on “Member States of the WHO in the European Region to take policy action to dismantle the austerity measures instituted over the last ten years” to “ensure the availability of more resources that could be allocated to improving financial protection, reducing unmet needs and alleviating poverty related to the use of health services”.
