PSI and other global unions have agreed to support striking workers through a Myanmar Strike Fund. Our funds will support health workers, local government and other public service workers who will not be paid and face significant security risks during this critical time. When the time is right, we will also support these new unions to grow.

At least 466 protesters have been murdered. More than 2,000 people, including trade unionists, have been arrested.

When the military of Myanmar instigated a coup and took over government on February 1st this year, health workers were amongst the first to take strike action. Since then, workers from all sectors, including public services and public administration, have joined them in a Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM). PSI applauded their courage and continues to seek ways to support striking workers.

The trade union movement, including the national center, Confederation of Trade Unions Myanmar (CTUM) have been coordinating a national strike that has closed public transport, mines, administration, factories. Students, farmers and civil society have joined workers and demonstrated that the country is united against the military regime.

The military has responded with lethal violence. At least 466 protesters have been murdered. More than 2,000 people, including trade unionists, have been arrested.

Yet workers continue to resist the military regime. Health workers staged a courageous march through the streets of Mandalay (the second largest city in Myanmar) on Sunday 21st March.
